Deacon Ministry

The office of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ.  Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, of exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, warm sympathies, and sound judgment are chosen for this office.

The Deacon Ministry in the life of the Christian Church is to insure that members of the church family receive care, support, and life-encouragement needed for facing life’s challenges.  Therefore, the purpose of the ministry of Deacons of Morning Star Baptist Church is to offer a caring heart to any whom God brings it way, right her, right now, in the heart of our city.  They are to minister to those in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith.

Deacons look after the spiritual welfare of the congregation, and help the pastor in visitation and in many other matters.  The deacons administer the Lord’s Supper to       the congregation, and they regularly meet together with the pastor to plan and pray concerning the work of the church.  The deacons shall assist in planning and implementing worship service programs; performing pastoral ministries; proclaiming   the gospel to believers and unbelievers; caring for church members and other persons         in the community; and leading the church to engage in fellowship, witnessing, education, and ministry.  Deacons shall lead by example.  Specifically, the deacons shall:

a.   Work diligently to bring people to Christ through evangelism

b.   Assist the pastor in administering the spiritual and physical needs of church members and the community

c.   Provide counsel for the pastor and assist him in promoting the work of the church

d.   Assist the pastor in administering the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper

e.   Arrange for a pulpit supply in the absence of the pastor

f.    Handle all matters of discipline and nurture of members of the church with the counsel of the pastor.

g.   Review the church membership roster annually and publish a new membership roster each calendar year

h.   Hold frequent meetings to discuss matters of importance in their duties
